Man charged with murder in 2022 death of his father in Pueblo West

A man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of second-degree murder in the September 2022 death of his 90-year-old father.

Paul Benjamin Sandoval was arrested following a monthslong investigation into the death of his father, Benny Sandoval, on Sept. 30, 2022, according to a news release by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.

PCSO deputies were called to a home in Pueblo West at about 1:15 a.m. on Sept. 8, on a report of a family disturbance. At the scene, deputies say they learned from a witness that Paul Sandoval had "grabbed his father by the neck and threw him to the ground following an argument over money," the sheriff's office claimed in the release.

At that time, the PCSO said Benny Sandoval refused medical treatment and did not want to pursue charges against his son. Later that day, deputies responded to a medical call involving Benny Sandoval, during which he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and later transferred to another hospital in Colorado Springs for a brain bleed.

Benny Sandoval died Sept. 30.

An autopsy later determined Benny Sandoval died as a result of blunt-force trauma, according to the release. His death was then ruled a homicide. Sheriff’s detectives investigating the case determined the assault by Paul Sandoval on Sept. 8 led to Benny Sandoval’s death.

Sandoval was arrested Thursday on suspicion of second-degree murder, a Class 2 felony, and robbery of an at-risk adult. He was booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center where he’s being held on a $500,000 cash, surety or property bond.
