Man charged with possession of weapons, including airsoft pistols and nunchaku

SINGAPORE — A Singaporean man was charged in court on Wednesday (9 March) for allegedly possessing contraband weapons, including two airsoft pistols, one replica pistol, and a nunchaku.

Apart from having the weapons in his residence in Yishun Avenue 6, Ong Tai Weng, 47, is accused of importing replica weapons into Singapore without permits.

Ong is said to have illicitly imported a replica pistol into Singapore at Changi Airport between 2011 and 2021, and an MP5 replica toy gun with magazine into Singapore Post Centre between September and October 2020. He was handed two counts under the Regulation of Imports and Export Regulations for these alleged offences,

Ong was given one count under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act for possessing a black nunchaku without a lawful purpose.

He faces two counts under the Arms and Explosive Act for possessing without a license a black airsoft pistol with magazine; a black magazine with 22 BB with an attachment bracket; a black eye accessory; a black silencer; a torchlight with casing; a black airsoft pistol with magazine; a black and blue magazine with a black casing; a brown eye accessory and an attachment bracket; and a green weapon housing.

These items were allegedly found at Ong’s Yishun residence on 4 December last year. Police officers had raided Ong’s residence upon receiving a a tip-off.

If convicted of possessing arms without a licence, Ong faces up to three years' jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

If convicted of importing controlled goods without a permit, he may be jailed up to two years and/or fined up to $100,000.

If convicted of possessing a scheduled weapon, Ong may be jailed up to five years and faces at least six strokes of the cane.
