Man charged with sexual assault of a minor

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Scranton Police Special Victim’s Unit charged a man with the sexual assault of a minor that occurred in 2022.

According to Scranton Police on September 15, 2022, officers responded to a PFA violation that led to an investigation into a sexual assault of a 13-year-old.

Investigators say after DNA tests were concluded and search warrants were executed, Michael Putzulu Jr. (pictured below) was identified as the alleged sexual offender.

Charges filed in fatal Wayne County UTV crash

Police say Putzulu Jr. was incarcerated at the State Correction Institution (SCI) Somerset on separate charges when he was identified.

According to law enforcement, on February 7, 2024, Putzulu Jr. waived his right to a hearing and was charged with felony counts of statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, and corruption of minors.

Putzulu Jr. remains in SCI Somerset as he awaits trial on the new charges.
