Man charged with strangling girlfriend in their home, deputies say

ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was charged with murder in the strangling death of his 63-year-old girlfriend in Zeeland Township in January, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Randal Grinwis, 57, of Zeeland Township, was charged Thursday with open murder and larceny.

Around 9 p.m. on Jan. 1, deputies were sent to a home on Patti Place near Lizbeth Drive in Zeeland Township for a wellness check on 63-year-old Donna Hyma. She was found dead in her home. An autopsy determined she had been strangled, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives found that Grinwis, who had been living with Hyma, had fled after her death to Las Vegas, Nevada. They said he took items from the home before he left.

The Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office issued warrants for Grinwis and deputies worked with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Detectives to find him. He was taken into custody in Las Vegas on Feb. 9 and extradited to Ottawa County Thursday. He was booked into the Ottawa County Jail and denied bond.

Detectives continue to investigate. Anyone with information should contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office or Silent Observer at 1.877.88.SILENT (745368).
