Man and child injured in shooting outside South Anchorage grocery store, police say

Aug. 3—A man and a child were shot Thursday morning outside a South Anchorage Fred Meyer grocery store, police said.

Both of the injured people were treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers were called to the Fred Meyer store on Abbott Road around 11:45 a.m. on reports of a shooting, according to police. A man and woman were outside the store with their children when an altercation began with a man they did not know, police said.

At least two shots were fired and the lone man and one of the couple's children were shot in the upper body, police said.

"The person or persons responsible for firing the shots is still being determined," police wrote in a statement.

The family left the area and the father dropped off the mother and injured child at the hospital, police said. Officers stopped the father, who was driving the SUV with the other children near the hospital, and took him into custody for questioning at the Anchorage Police Department, according to police.

The wounded man was brought to a hospital by Anchorage Fire Department medics, police said.

Multiple witnesses called police and provided statements, the department said.

No charges had immediately been filed by Thursday afternoon, said Renee Oistad, a spokeswoman for the police. The department does not expect to release any additional information about the shooting until Friday, she said.
