Man cleaning out truck stumbles upon lottery tickets. One held a huge surprise

A Virginia man stumbled upon lottery tickets in his truck — and one held a huge surprise.

Douglas Herbert was cleaning out his truck when he discovered the batch of tickets. He decided to check them and discovered one was worth $100,000, officials said.

Herbert, a Richmond resident, is still grasping the big win, the Virginia Lottery wrote in an Aug. 29 news release.

“I scratched my head,” Herbert told lottery officials. “I had to make sure. It’s going to take time to sink in.”

Herbert’s win was the real deal, and it came after he went to a Chubby’s store in the Richmond area. While there, officials said he spent $3 on a ticket for the Powerball game’s June 14 drawing.

The night of the drawing, the estimated Powerball jackpot was $342 million. Though Herbert missed out on the jackpot prize, his ticket still matched enough numbers — four numbers as well as the Powerball — to win big.

The Virginia Lottery in its news release didn’t say how much money he kept after taxes.

It’s not the first time someone has left a lucky lottery ticket in their truck. In South Carolina, a man flipped down his truck’s visor and found a forgotten ticket that made him richer, McClatchy News reported in March.
