Man in Concord wins top prize on $20 scratch-off

The scratch-off ticket might be called 100X The Cash, but it ended up earning a man from Concord more than 42,000 times his money.

Matthew Helms got the $20 lottery ticket from Little Buck Food Mart on S. Union Street in Concord and revealed a $2 million prize, the North Caroline Education Lottery announced Monday.

Helms claimed his prize on Monday and chose to get a lump sum of $1.2 million. After taxes, he took home a little over $855,000.

But if Helms had opted for the top prize over 20 years of payments, he would’ve actually won 100,000X The Cash.

According to lottery officials, there are still three top prizes of $2 million left out there.
