Man considered 'armed and dangerous' wanted in machete attack in Anthony, NM

A man may still be armed with a machete that he allegedly used to attack his mother on Monday in Anthony, New Mexico, Crime Stoppers of El Paso said Thursday.

Francisco Smith III, 22, who is "considered armed and dangerous," has been sought by law enforcement since Monday morning when he allegedly stabbed his mother, prompting Gadsden High School and other nearby schools to go into a temporary "shelter in place" as a precaution. The woman's wounds were not considered life threatening.

Smith is wanted by police in Anthony, New Mexico, on charges of aggravated battery against a household member and two counts of aggravated assault, Crime Stoppers said. The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search.

Crime Stoppers stated, "Due to his violent behavior, please do not approach Smith and contact authorities instead."

Smith is 5 feet 6 inches tall, 160 pounds and may still have the machete with him.

Anthony is located at the New Mexico-Texas state line, just north of El Paso.
