Man convicted at trial of burglary, child endangerment in Leavenworth home invasion

A 23-year-old man was convicted Tuesday on six felonies stemming from a home invasion that occurred in Leavenworth earlier this year, according to prosecutors.

Dejuan E. Sweet, of Leavenworth, was found guilty after a two-day jury trial of aggravated burglary, aggravated child endangerment and battery, the Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. He was scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 4.

Prosecutors say Sweet and another person broke into a home on March 26 to demand money from one person there. Sweet allegedly forced his way inside and pointed a gun toward a man and his pregnant girlfriend, according to prosecutors.

Two other children under age 6 were inside at the time, prosecutors said, and Sweet allegedly pointed the gun at a father who was trying to move a child to another room for safety.

In a statement Tuesday, Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said the crime was “a frightening ordeal for all involved.

“A burglary with people in the home is one of the most traumatic crimes,” Thompson said. “Your home is your castle, your sanctuary, and when unwanted people invade it, it creates an everlasting feeling of fear and discomfort for the victims.”
