Man crawling on street, pedestrian on sidewalk die after being hit in Arlington crashes

Two men died this week after separate auto-pedestrian accidents that happened within the past month, the Arlington Police Department said in news releases Wednesday.

The first accident occurred the evening of Dec. 18 at the intersection of East Park Row Drive and Susan Drive.

Investigators believe a 2013 Honda Civic was traveling eastbound through the intersection and was hit by a 2014 Mazda 6 that was turning left from the westbound lanes of Park Row Drive onto the southbound lanes of Susan Drive.

The impact caused the Civic to leave the roadway and hit a pedestrian who was walking on the sidewalk, according to police. The driver of the Mazda 6 was determined to be at fault for the wreck, the release says.

The pedestrian, a 44-year-old man, was transported to a local hospital, where he remained until he was pronounced dead on Jan. 1. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Tajudeen Salami, of Arlington.

The driver of the Civic stayed on scene, called 911, and cooperated with investigators, the release says. He is not facing any criminal charges in connection to the accident.

The driver of the Mazda 6 left the scene and did not attempt to render aid, according to police. Officers later found the car at a nearby apartment complex. The driver, 25-year-old Paula Cely-Bernal, was arrested on a charge of accident involving serious bodily injury. She is now being charged with accident involving death.

The second fatal accident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, when police responded to the 300 block of West Division Street to investigate a collision between a pickup truck and a pedestrian.

Officers found a 48-year-old man lying in the roadway, according to the release. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Witnesses told investigators they saw the man crawling across Division Street just before being hit by the truck. He was not using a designated crossing at the time and it is unclear why he was crawling across the street, the release says.

The driver who struck him was unable to see him in time to avoid him, police said in the release. Following the collision, the driver immediately stopped, called 911 and cooperated with investigators.

The driver is not facing any criminal charges in connection to the crash.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the man once next of kin have been notified.
