Man in custody after drunken ATV crash injures juvenile

Apr. 10—GRAYSON — An Olive Hill man is facing prison time in connection to an ATV accident that injured a child in February.

Clifford B. Carter, 34, was booked into Carter County Detention Center Monday on charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, endangering the welfare of a minor and other ATV violations following the rollover accident.

According to court documents, Carter was picked up on an arrest warrant late Sunday evening, alleging the child involved in the previous accident sustained a broken arm and other minor injuries after Carter flipped a Yamaha ATV while in care of the child.

The warrant obtained by The Daily Independent alleges Carter admitted to a sheriff's deputy that he was under the influence of alcohol leading up to the rollover accident with the juvenile on board.

The charge of first-degree wanton endangerment, a class D felony, was issued to Carter for "creating a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury," to the juvenile, which carries a possible five-year prison sentence if Carter is to be convicted.

Along with charging Carter for endangering the welfare of a minor he was in a care taking role of, the warrant accuses Carter of operating the ATV on a public roadway prior to the wreck, although a specific location of the accident is not disclosed.

Carter is set for an arraignment hearing in Carter County District Court on April 24.

According to online jail information, Carter has since been released from custody as of this writing.
