Man in custody at Spartanburg County Detention Center dies at hospital

The Spartanburg County coroner's office has identified a man who died Saturday at the hospital after being in the custody of Spartanburg County jail.

Spartanburg Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified Latrone Jamel McDaniel, 45, in a Monday afternoon email. McDaniel had been incarcerated at the jail, but died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center at 7:17 a.m. on Saturday, Clevenger said.

McDaniel was taken from the jail to the medical center on Friday with complaints of leg pain. After an autopsy Monday, Clevenger said the death examination was "pending further studies." Clevenger told the Herald-Journal that he believed the cause of death was related to McDaniel's reported leg pain, but could not elaborate more until further examination was complete. He added there were no signs of foul play.

Clevenger said McDaniel did not have a permanent residence.

This was the fourth in-custody death at the jail this year, Clevenger said. The Herald-Journal previously reported there were 18 deaths at the jail between 2015 and 2021, the most of any county in the state. There were five deaths in 2022.

Clevenger said his office joined the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division in the investigation, and final results would be forwarded to SLED.
