Man dead after falling off cliff in Smyth County, sheriff says

SMYTH COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office reports one person has died after falling off a cliff near Chilhowie, Virginia Saturday evening.

A news release from the sheriff’s office said the incident took place just after 5 p.m. Saturday on Highway 107 near Horseshoe Bend Road.

Authorities arrived to find an elderly man, later identified as 84-year-old George Robert Snedeker of Chilhowie, lying on the ground on the shoulder of the highway, according to the release.

An investigation determined Snedeker had fallen off a cliff and passed away as a result of the fall. The sheriff’s office said although the fall remains under investigation, it appears to have been a tragic accident.
