Authorities say a 2017 Hyundai Elantra was driving east on US 70, crossed the center of the road into opposing traffic, and crashed head-on into a 2022 Honda CR-V driving west.

According to officials, the driver of the Elantra, 57-year-old Tony Linn Strickland, from Morganton, died from his injuries while he was transported to a hospital in Valdese. The driver of the CR-V, a 54-year-old man from Connelly Springs, was taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers believe impairment contributed to the crash. US 70 was closed for about two hours during the on-scene investigation. No charges are being filed.
