Man dies after being struck by school bus in hit-and-run crash

A 73-year-old Gates man died after he was struck by a school bus that then fled the scene in northwest Rochester Thursday morning, according to Rochester police.

The crash occurred around 7:15 a.m. on at Ontario Bus Inc. on Lexington Avenue, just east of Edison Career and Technology School on Colfax Street. Michael Rivoli was walking across Fisher Street as buses were leaving the business's bus depot, when he was struck by a bus leaving the lot, said Lt. Michael Perkowski of the Rochester Police Department.

Rivoli, an employee of the Ontario Bus company, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus driver left the lot before emergency responders arrived and was located a "short time later" in Greece, said Rochester Police Lt. Greg Bello. No children were on the bus at the time of the collision. The bus driver was not identified by police but is cooperating with the investigation, officers said.

RPD's Major Crimes Unit is investigating the fatal crash. No charges have been filed as of Thursday morning as the case will be referred to the Monroe County District Attorney's Office. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 911.
