Man dies after car plunges into quarry early Thursday on Columbus' West Side

A man crashed his car into a quarry early Thursday morning on Columbus' West Side, plunging about 50 feet or five stories to his death.

According to Columbus police, a four-door Toyota sedan was found overturned in water at the bottom of the quarry around 2:50 a.m. Thursday. The driver was pulled out of the vehicle by Columbus fire crews in a rescue boat, but he did not survive his injuries.

The man's identity had not yet been released by police pending confirmation of his identity and notification of family.

There were no other occupants of the vehicle, which was pulled out of the quarry around 7:45 a.m. Thursday.

Police said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed on West 5th Avenue when it crossed over McKinley Avenue southeast of Trabue Road and plowed through a fence before plunging into the quarry.

The crash remains under investigation.
