Man dies in fiery booze-fueled crash on New England Thruway in the Bronx

A man was killed early Friday during a fiery booze-fueled Bronx crash, police said.

The carnage began on the northbound side of the New England Thruway at the Baychester Ave. exit outside Co-op City about 4:15 a.m. when a BMW zooming down the exit ramp collided with a median and exploded into flames, authorities said.

A Toyota Camry traveling behind the BMW veered away from the burning sedan, but the 27-year-old driver lost control of the steering wheel, cops said.

The Camry “flipped” down the exit ramp and crashed into the median, witnesses told police. The 22-year-old victim, who was seated in the front passenger seat, and the 27-year-old driver were briefly pinned in the vehicle before EMS rushed both men to Jacobi Medical Center.

The passenger died at the hospital, police said.

The driver was listed in stable condition, but was immediately taken into custody after cops learned that he had been drinking before the crash, police sources said. Charges were pending as the motorist recovers.

The man driving the BMW was also rushed to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Two other cars collided with each other as they slowed to avoid the burning car, but neither driver was seriously injured, cops said.
