Jun. 8—An elderly man died Tuesday morning at the Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy in the midst of the city and school board elections.
Emergency crews were called to the MCTEA just before 10 a.m. to a report of an unconscious male.
School personnel at the building rendered CPR to the man until first responders arrived, according to Mitchell School District Superintendent Joe Graves.
The Mitchell Police Division confirmed the man, in his 80s, had died before first responders arrived.
The name of the man was not immediately released.
South Dakota law only nullifies the ballot of an absentee voter who dies before the opening of the polls. The South Dakota Secretary of State's office confirmed Tuesday that the man's vote will count.
