HOPKINTON — A man died early Wednesday morning after his car was struck by two other vehicles — including one that was traveling in the wrong direction — on Interstate 495, according to state police.

In a press release, Massachusetts State Police said they responded to reports of a wrong-way driver at about 12:15 a.m. As troopers approached the area, a 2018 Ford Transit van driven by 29-year-old Taunton resident Devin Arroyo struck an Infiniti head-on in the northbound lane of the highway, authorities said.

A 41-year-old Providence man who had been driving a tractor-trailer behind the car was unable to brake in time to avoid colliding with the Infiniti.

The car’s driver, an unidentified adult man, was taken to the UMass Memorial Health-Marlborough Hospital and pronounced dead.

Arroyo’s van rolled over after hitting the car, and he was transported to UMass-Worcester with minor injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation and Hopkinton police, fire and EMS all assisted at the scene. The incident shut down all lanes of I-495 northbound at Exit 58, with that section of the highway reopening to traffic at about 4:50 a.m., state police said.

Troopers took Arroyo into custody at the hospital for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, authorities said, adding there may be further charges against him pending the results of an ongoing investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by troopers from the State Police Millbury Barracks and the Worcester County State Police Detective Unit, with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.
