Man dies after shooting at Fort Lauderdale bus terminal

Police are searching for a gunman and his accomplice who killed a man when they fired shots in a Fort Lauderdale bus terminal over the weekend.

The gunman fired his weapon multiple times at the terminal at 101 NW First Ave. on Saturday afternoon, striking two bystanders, trees, buildings and, eventually, the person he was trying to shoot, police said.

The two bystanders' injuries were not life-threatening. They were treated at Broward Health Medical Center, where one is still recovering and the other was released.

The gunman’s target, 28-year-old Davonta Gaines, of Fort Lauderdale, was critically wounded and died in the hospital later that night, police said.

Fort Lauderdale Police have not yet identified the gunman or his accomplice but released footage from security cameras along Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk that shows them fleeing, walking briskly south along the New River waterway and looking behind them every few steps.

The woman had a brief interaction with Gaines across the street from the bus terminal before the shooting, according to investigators. After their conversation, she walked back to the bus terminal and spoke to the gunman, police said.

When Gaines walked into the bus terminal, the shooter immediately fired multiple shots, hitting Gaines and the two bystanders, police said.

Authorities ask anyone with information to call Detective Sergeant Steve Novak at 954-828-5556 or Detective Michael Benson at 954-828-6561. Those who want to remain anonymous can contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 or online at https://browardcrimestoppers.org/.
