Man dies at Spartanburg County Detention Center, marking second inmate death this month

Weeks after an inmate's death sparked protests outside the Spartanburg County Detention Center, another inmate died Friday.

John Edward Miller, 48, was taken to the Spartanburg Medical Center due to "an apparent natural medical event," Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said in a press statement.

Miller was pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m. Friday. Clevenger said in the statement. He said a forensic examination is scheduled for Oct. 29.

Miller is the second inmate death reported in just a month at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

Lavell Najah Lane, 29, was pronounced dead on Oct. 3 by the Coroner's Office. At the time, Clevenger said an investigation was pending with South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

He said toxicology results would be complete in about 6-8 weeks.
