Man dies surfing Oregon coast. His friend helped pull him to shore, rescuers say

A surfer died after his friend noticed he was face down in the water and helped pull him to shore, Oregon rescuers said.

The 51-year-old Portland man was surfing with a friend, who noticed the man was “facedown and unresponsive” as they paddled through less than 3-foot high waves near Seaside Cove on Saturday, April 15, Seaside Fire and Rescue said in an April 17 news release.

Three surfers, including the man’s friend, pulled him to shore, rescuers said.

The surfers were performing CPR on the man when rescuers got there, according to the release.

Rescuers said they took the man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Seaside Cove is about 80 miles northwest of Portland.
