Man drives on flat tires to evade police during 21-mile chase from Sterling to Concord

A man wanted for stealing a car in Rhode Island rode on flat tires more than 20 miles on two major highways to avoid being apprehended by police, according to authorities.

According to the state police, the unidentified man was driving the stolen 2008 Dodge Charger on Interstate 190 north in Sterling at 2:47 a.m. Wednesday when a trooper saw the vehicle.

The driver, who earlier fled from Worcester police, refused to pull over for the trooper. State police used tire deflation devices in an attempt to stop the driver of the Charger, but he continued to drive on flat tires onto Route 2 eastbound in Leominster.

The driver was driving on the tire rims by the time he reached the Interstate 495 interchange in Littleton, police said.

At 3:18 a.m., after driving around 21 miles on flat tires and rims, a state police sergeant was able to box in the driver and the Charger on Route 2 east in Concord, just past Walden Pond. The man, the only person in the vehicle, was arrested and will be arraigned in Clinton District Court at a future date.

Three state police cruisers were struck by the driver and damaged during the pursuit, police said.
