Man drowns in Virginia Beach, police say

A man has drowned at Croatan Beach south of the Oceanfront, police said Thursday morning.

It happened near the 900 block of South Atlantic Avenue, the Virginia Beach Police Department wrote in a brief tweet.

A citizen who saw the body called police shortly after 8 a.m., department spokeswoman Linda Kuehn said in a text message. Officials are currently on scene.

The man is approximated to have been 30 to 50 years old, Kuehn confirmed. Investigators are working to identify him and notify next of kin.

Police did not immediately release any further information.
