Man escapes home fire

Apr. 3—A Zionsville man escaped serious injury when fire broke out in his garage just after 5 a.m. Monday.

But he was still taken to a hospital to be checked out after inhaling smoke, Zionsville Division Chief Jason Potts said.

The man, whom authorities declined to name Monday, was home alone when the fire started on the back side of the garage, Potts said. The middle-aged man escaped his home at 919 Warbler Way in rural Zionsville and ran to a neighbor's house to ask them to call 911.

Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the garage roof, Potts said. There are no hydrants in the area, but multiple fire departments brought water to the home with their tankers, and the fire was under control within 25 minutes, ZFD said in a news statement.

The home did have smoke detectors, and the fire's cause and origin are under investigation, but ZFD estimated damage to the home at more than $200,000.

Agencies assisting at the scene were Whitestown Fire Department, Center Township Fire Department, Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department, Zionsville Police Department and Boone County Sheriff's Office.

About 80 percent of all U.S. fire deaths occur in the home, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Area firefighters suggest sleeping with the bedroom door shut, maintaining smoke detectors, and having a family plan in case of fire, among other measures, to prevent injury and death.
