A man who was fatally shot late Tuesday night after allegedly pulling a weapon on a Corpus Christi police officer while trying to evade arrest has been identified.

Steve Neff, 50, was determined to have died from a gunshot wound, the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office told the Caller-Times Thursday.

The officer who shot Neff, not yet identified by the Corpus Christi Police Department, will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with the department's practice and policy, a news release stated.

According to the news release, the shooting occurred after an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was traveling near Gollihar Road and Randall Drive.

The driver, now identified as Neff, attempted to evade the officer. The officer did not pursue him, the news release said.

Shortly afterward, officers were called to a two-vehicle crash at the 4200 block of Kostoryz Road.

Three adults and a child were injured in the crash. Two of the adults and the child were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Officers recognized the vehicle of the suspect and attempted to make contact with Neff, who was still inside. Neff then broke out of the passenger window and ran from police.

One officer located Neff in an alleyway in the 4100 block of Kostoryz Road. When the man saw the officer, he pulled out a weapon. A second officer shot the suspect.

Neff was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
