Girlfriend’s brother arrested after man fatally shot outside North Texas grocery store

A man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Denton grocery store Thursday night, police said, and a suspect has been arrested.

Officers were dispatched to WinCo Foods in the 2600 block of West University Drive around 8:10 p.m. regarding a shooting call. They found a man with at least one gunshot wound lying in the parking lot, according to police.

The victim was already dead when officers arrived, officials said. Authorities haven’t publicly identified the victim pending family notification.

Police determined that the shooter had left the scene and there was no immediate threat to the public. They later arrested 23-year-old Kendrick Freeney on suspicion of murder, officials said in a press release.

Freeney is the brother of the victim’s girlfriend, police said. The victim, Freeney and the victim’s girlfriend were involved in an argument before the shooting, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing, officials said. Freeney is being held in the City of Denton Jail and his bond has not yet been set.
