Springfield police say they fatally shot a man Friday evening after responding to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment.

Police say Mitchell R. Hooe, 28, from Arkansas, died at the scene after being shot by police at about 7 p.m. at an apartment in the 1000 block of East McDaniel Street.

According to the Springfield Police Department, officers were dispatched to the apartment for a domestic disturbance where a man was armed with a gun.

A news release from police says that when officers arrived they determined the armed man was inside one of the apartment units along with a woman and her children.

"The woman was not able to speak freely to officers, and it appeared she and her children were in immediate danger," the release says.

Police say officers then forced entry into the apartment and "engaged" Hooe. The release says the encounter ended with an officer shooting Hooe.

Police say the woman and her children were not injured nor were any of the officers.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).
