Man fatally stabbed at Times Square Dave & Buster's in New York, police say

NEW YORK – A man was stabbed to death inside a Times Square Dave & Buster's after an incident at the popular arcade restaurant, police said.

In a statement Sunday, the New York City Police Department identified Allen Stanford, 39, of Manhattan, as the victim of the attack Saturday.

Jesse Armstrong, 41, was arrested and charged with murder, police said Sunday. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could provide comment on his behalf.

Police received a call Saturday around 10:45 p.m. about an assault in progress and arrived at the Dave & Buster's, where Stanford had been stabbed in the chest.

Stanford was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

The New York Times and Post, citing unnamed police sources, reported Stanford and Armstrong fought in the prize area of the Dave & Buster's. Stanford reached up to a high shelf with a prize box that fell near Armstrong and a young girl, the newspapers reported. The Post reported surveillance cameras captured the incident on video.

The two men began fighting, and Armstrong pulled out a knife and stabbed Stanford, police sources told the newspapers. The Post reported a Dave & Buster's employee identified Armstrong after he fled to a nearby subway station.

Dave & Buster's is a restaurant and game venue where guests can win tickets to exchange for prizes. The Times reported a drone was the prize box that fell and led to the fight.

Murders are down 13% in New York City this year, but felony assaults are up 21%, according to NYPD statistics. Crime is far lower than its peaks in the city in the 1980s and 1990s.
