Authorities are investigating the death of a man after he reportedly walked into the side of a moving semi-truck on the Hesperia side of Bear Valley Road.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office on Tuesday had not yet identified the 23-year old man who was killed that morning near the corner of Bear Valley Road and Balsam Avenue pending notification of next of kin.

The Hesperia Sheriff’s Station reported that at approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to the Bear Valley Road intersection with reports of an auto versus pedestrian traffic collision.

Upon arrival, deputies and San Bernardino County Fire personnel found a man down in the No. 3 lane of Bear Valley Road.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he later died, according to sheriff’s officials.

A witness to the collision told sheriff’s investigators that it appeared the man intentionally entered the roadway and walked into the side of a semi-truck traveling eastbound on Bear Valley Road.

Investigators believe the semi-truck driver was unaware of the collision and are still working to identify that driver.

The sheriff’s report included information on the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Veterans Crisis Line.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez said she didn’t have information confirming if the man was a veteran.

After the collision, Bear Valley Road was closed as sheriff’s officials investigated the scene, authorities said.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached by calling 800-273-TALK (8255), or by texting the Crisis Text Line (text HELLO to 741741).

The Veterans Crisis Line can be reached by calling 800-273-8255 or by texting a message to 838255.

Anyone with information about the ongoing investigation is asked by the sheriff's department to contact the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station at 760-947-1500 or Sheriff’s Dispatch at 760-956-5001.
