Man flown to hospital after his car collides with dump truck in Ashland

ASHLAND A local man suffered "significant, life-threatening injuries" Tuesday after his car crashed head-on into a dump truck on Chestnut Street, police said.

The man, who has not been identified, was flown by a medical rescue helicopter to a Boston hospital after the 9:30 a.m. crash, according to Police Chief Cara Rossi.

The man was driving north on Chestnut Street near the Warren Inn and Conference Center when, for an unknown reason, his sedan swerved into the path of an oncoming dump truck that was heading southbound, the chief said.

"He (the truck driver) was very shaken up," said Rossi. "He tried to swerve out of the way. He did his best, but with a full load of asphalt in the back it's impossible to stop on a dime."

The driver of the car was trapped inside, so the Ashland Fire Department had to use a cutting tool to remove him and take him to the nearby landing zone.

The dump truck's fuel tank was damaged, with a large amount of fuel spilling to the ground. A hazardous materials team was at the scene, and Massachusetts State Police were conducting a reconstruction of the crash.

Along with the Ashland Police and Fire departments, also assisting at the scene were the Framingham and Hopkinton fire departments, as well as the Holliston Police Department.

A portion of Chestnut Street between Eliot Street and Joanne Drive was closed between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation, The sedan driver's condition was not immediately known.
