A man discovered dead in the back of a burned out auto in Potrero, Calif., was probably attempting to save a pet dog, authorities said Friday.

Authorities believed the victim, who was not identified, got out of the flaming car but returned to try to save the pup before both died in Southern California on Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

On Friday, the cause of the inferno remained under investigation, the newspaper reported.

San Diego County Sheriff’s Lt. Ricardo Lopez said the flames from the car sparked a three-acre brush fire in the area, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Potrero is a lightly populated community nestled near the border with Mexico.
