Man found dead in Chickasaw hotel room; man arrested at Mississippi casino: MCSO

CHICKASAW, Ala. (WKRG) — A man was found dead in a hotel room in Chickasaw Tuesday, and another man was arrested in connection to the crime.

A release from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said officials with the Chickasaw Police Department contacted them asking for assistance in a death investigation. Deputies arrived at the M Star Hotel, located on West Lee Street, and went to room 235.

In that room, deputies found Christopher Ryan Martin, 38, with a gunshot wound underneath his chin, according to the release. A 9 mm shell casing was found under Martin near his neck, said the release.

Detectives watched the surveillance video that was taken outside of the room that morning. The release said they saw a man go to the room at 3:40 a.m. A gunshot was then heard at 3:41 a.m. before the man that they saw on surveillance video left the hotel in a dark SUV, according to the release. That man was identified as 48-year-old Cornelius Layette Smith, according to the release.

MCSO detectives and US Marshals were able to locate Smith at the Island View Casino in Gulf Port, Mississippi. He was arrested and charged with murder.
