Man found dead after house fire in Lower Kalskag

Nov. 15—A man was found dead Friday after a house fire in the Southwest Alaska village of Lower Kalskag, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers were notified around 7:05 a.m. that the home had burned and was smoldering. No other structures were in danger, but troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said the home was destroyed.

A trooper from Aniak, 27 miles east of Lower Kalskag, reached the home early Friday afternoon after poor weather hampered the initial response, DeSpain said. A deputy state fire marshal arrived later that afternoon on a separate flight, he said.

Authorities found human remains inside the home, DeSpain said. The remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for positive identification, but DeSpain said troopers believe the man who died lived there. Two other people lived at the home but were not there when the fire started, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
