A man who ran from a crash scene Saturday night was found dead Monday morning, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

Around 11 p.m. on Sept. 3, officers responded to a two-car crash at Winchester and Outland Road.

When they arrived, officers found one vehicle that had been involved in a crash, but no one was inside.

The second unknown vehicle had already left the scene.

A witness told police that two men had gotten out of the crashed vehicle and jumped into a nearby ditch.

MPD said the men were not found.

Just before noon on Sunday, officers responded to a missing person in the 4600 block of Winchester.

According to police, the caller told investigators that he and his cousin were inside the crashed vehicle at Winchester and Outland the previous night. He told police that he and his cousin left the scene and jumped in a nearby ditch.

His cousin, 29-year-old Elber Gomez Velasquez, who was driving the car, did not return home.

MPD issued a City Watch and searched the area, with help from Canine and Air Support, but they did not find Velasquez.

Monday at approximately 10:31 a.m., officers were sent to 3800 Knight Arnold Road, where Velasquez’s body was found.

The cause of death is unknown at this point, but police said there were no signs of foul play.

MPD said they are still investigating.
