Man found dead in Portsmouth; police have person of interest in homicide

Police are investigating a homicide after officers found a man dead from a gunshot wound in Portsmouth Tuesday night.

Officers responded to the 2700 block of Watts Avenue at 6:10 p.m. following a report of a suspicious man. They found the body of 37-year-old Corey J. Harris, police said.

Police have a person of interest but as of Thursday had not charged anyone in relation to Harris’ death, according to Victoria Varnedoe, a spokesperson for Portsmouth police.

In a news release, police called the death “an isolated incident” and said they are not looking for any additional suspects. Varnedoe confirmed the death is being investigated as a homicide and the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted.

Investigators determined there was a crime scene near the Quick Shop convenience store on the 2600 block of Columbus Avenue, which is on the same block where Harris’s body was found. It’s unclear how the site where the body was found is connected to the scene at the convenience store.
