Woman arrested, faces homicide charge after fatal motel shooting, Nashville police say

·1 min read

A man was found shot to death inside a Dickerson Pike motel Sunday morning, Nashville police reported.

Police identified the man as Gary O. McClain, 60. He was found by motel staff at 10 a.m. inside a room at the Savoy Motel, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

MNPD announced Wednesday that Jakira Coleman-Griffen, 20, of Detroit, was arrested in Georgia in connection with the shooting. She is in custody in Cobb County, Georgia. A warrant charging her with criminal homicide was issued in Davidson County on Wednesday.

Coleman-Griffen is expected to be returned to Nashville soon, police said.

How the arrest unfolded

Police said a woman was seen arriving to the motel with McClain earlier Sunday morning, then leaving with his car.

Authorities in Georgia spotted McClain's car, which was listed as stolen in a national database, and pursued it. MNPD said Coleman-Griffen had a nine millimeter semi-automatic pistol at the time of her arrest.

"During an interview with MNPD Homicide detectives overnight, Coleman-Griffen admitted to killing McClain by shooting him in the head," MNPD said in a news release Wednesday. "Robbery is believed to be the motive."
