A man with a gun attacked a Cracker Barrel employee. A 'hero' grandma died saving her life

A grandmother in Houston was shot in the chest and killed while protecting a Cracker Barrel co-worker on Saturday, police said.

Robin Baucom, 59, a manager and 34-year employee at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Houston, is being hailed as a hero after she took a bullet for her co-worker when a man opened fire.

Harris County Police Department Sheriff Ed Gonzalez detailed the shooting, noting that two men in a Dodge Charger pulled up near the front door and tried to steal a Cracker Barrel employee's purse.

According to the police report, Baucom opened the door to let the employee in the restaurant door before pushing one of the men, who tried to force his way in. In a struggle, the man shot Baucom in the chest. She died at a hospital on Sunday, according to Harris County Constable Mark Herman.

The employee she was protecting fled to safety.

"Our condolences go out to her family. Sad to think these victims were simply starting their day, working," Gonzalez tweeted.

Baucom's sister, Gail, told Houston television station KPRC: "She is our hero, and we hope she will be remembered as a hero because she lost her life trying to protect her employees and Cracker Barrel."

Baucom had a husband, three children and three grandchildren. On Sunday, a vigil was held at the restaurant, where dozens of co-workers and people came to pay their respects, according to ABC 13 in Houston. Candles were lit in her honor and blue balloons were released into the sky.

"She had a choice – leave the employee, shut the door and be safe, or pull the employee inside and try to shut the door, and she made the correct choice and sacrificed her own," Baucom's brother, Billy Crumpton, told ABC 13.

No arrests have been made, Gonzalez said.
