Man gunned down at Athens mobile home park after answering knock at the door

An Athens man was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday night after police said he was gunned down after opening a door in response to someone knocking.

The shooting occurred about 10:40 p.m. in Hallmark Mobile Home Park off Spring Valley Road, according to Athens-Clarke police.

Devante Gainey, 27, of Timber Ridge Drive was admitted to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center with a wound to the shoulder area that was bleeding profusely when an officer arrived, police said.

No suspects have been arrested and the motive is still under investigation, police Lt. Shaun Barnett said Thursday.

Gainey was visiting the home with his 27-year-old fiancée, who told police that about an hour before the shooting, three young men, who appeared to be 16 to 18 years old, were at the home having a conversation with the victim.

The woman told the officer it never appeared as if they were arguing and as they left, she heard one say, “I’ll be back.”

Later, witnesses in the home reported a knock on the door, but upon asking who was there, they received no reply, according to the report.

When Gainey opened the door, one of the men pointed a handgun, said “Gotcha” and shot Gainey once before running from the scene, police said.

Besides Gainey and his fiancée, there were two other women in the home who said they were familiar with the suspects and believed they likely lived in the mobile home park, according to police.
