Man gunned down in Lafayette apartment complex
LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A 21-year-old man couldn't outrun the bullets fired in his direction early Sunday as he ran west from Bay Pointe Apartments into the Pheasant Run Apartments.
He collapsed and died in the parking lot of the Pheasant Run Apartments, a neighbor who lives in the area said, adding he heard the gunshots and saw the man lying in the parking lot.
“I heard some gunfire. It came from that direction,” the neighbor said, pointing to the Bay Pointe Apartments just east of his apartment building. "Ten to 12 gunshots just before 1 (o'clock)."
“Part of the crime scene ended up over here,” he said, pointing to the parking lot south of his building.
Another resident in the area said, “We just heard the gunshots. That was it. Heard seven or eight gunshots.”
One tenant said gunshots are common.
“I’ve heard gunfire from that same spot before. It wouldn't be surprising,” the tenant said. “It happens around here.”
Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello confirmed that a 21-year-old man's death was being investigated by her office. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The coroner's office was attempting to contact the man's next of kin Sunday morning.
Lafayette police reported they received a call of shots fired in the Bay Pointe and Pheasant Run area around 12:45 a.m. Sunday. When officers arrived, they found a man dead outside of the apartments.
Police said it appeared it was a targeted shooting, and as of late Sunday morning, there were no arrests.
This is Lafayette's second homicide of 2023.
