Man hit and killed trying to cross U.S. 36 near Superior

Apr. 20—A man was killed after being hit by at least one vehicle Tuesday night while trying to cross U.S. 36 on foot near Superior.

Colorado State Patrol Master Trooper Gary Cutler said the pedestrian, a 38-year-old man, was crossing U.S. 36 from the south side to the north at 9:11 p.m. Tuesday at the 42 mile marker just west of Superior. While in the westbound lanes, the man was hit by a woman driving a 2007 Honda Accord.

Cutler said the pedestrian was not in any sort of crossing area.

The man was declared dead at the scene. He was identified by the Boulder County Coroner's Office Wednesday as Devraj Shapkota.

The Colorado State Patrol said Shapkota was from Frederick, but the coroner's office identified him as a Boulder resident.

Cutler said evidence shows the driver, a 25-year-old woman from Superior, did try to avoid the pedestrian and switch into another lane but was unable to avoid the collision. She was not injured and remained on scene.

Cutler said neither excessive speed nor intoxication are not suspected on the part of the driver, and she will not be facing charges.

But officials believe that before Shapkota was hit by the Honda driven by the 25-year-old woman, he was hit by other vehicles whose drivers did not stop, and they are looking for any possible witnesses.

Anyone that was in the area at that time and think they might have struck or run over anything not realizing it was a pedestrian is asked to call 303-239-4583 and refer case No. 1D221241.

Westbound U.S. 36 was closed for a period of time Tuesday night for investigation.
