A man died Friday afternoon when he was hit by a South Shore Line electric commuter train near the Skyway on the city’s South Side.

A preliminary investigation by Metra police indicated the man was trespassing on the rail line near the Grand Crossing station, at 75th Street and South South Shore Drive, about 3:10 p.m. when he was hit, Metra spokeswoman Sylvia Cooper said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the death, but his identity was not being made public yet, according to a spokesperson for the office.

As of 5 p.m., both inbound and outbound trains were moving again, but at a restricted speed, causing 15 minute delays, Cooper said.

With responding agencies including Metra’s police and fire departments, and the Chicago Fire Department, officials said there were no further details.
