A 50-year-old man hospitalized after a fire churned heavy smoke throughout a northeast-side apartment on New Year's Eve has died, according to the coroner’s office.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office announced Frederick Spinks died this week after the small fire broke out before midnight on New Year’s Eve at Timber Point Apartments, 6201 Newberry Road .

The blaze was contained to a pile of papers and books and did not spread to the rest of the apartment, but created thick smoke throughout the residence, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department. The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

Firefighters removed Spinks from the apartment through the third-floor window and he was taken by ambulance to Eskenazi Hospital for smoke inhalation. Spinks was awake and talking when he arrived, the coroner’s report said.

He told investigators he had no idea the fire happened until firefighters woke him up.

The coroner’s office on Friday said Spinks died Jan. 9 from smoke inhalation.
