Man killed in crash on South Side attempting to evade police

A male driver who was pulled over for a minor traffic violation Friday night was placed into custody, but drove away and a short time later his car flipped over after hitting two vehicles, fatally injuring himself, Chicago police said.

About 10:40 p.m., the man was stopped near the 400 block of West 76th Street for a traffic violation, but when police attempted to place him into custody, he drove off. A few minutes later, officers saw smoke and went to investigate and discovered it was the driver who had just taken off. He man’s vehicle had flipped over after striking two other vehicles, police said.

The man was driver was taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Four other victims also went to local hospitals for minor injuries, police said.

The Major Accidents Unit was investigating.
