Man killed in early morning crash after hitting police vehicle on Kirkwood Highway

A 25-year-old man from Pennsylvania died early Wednesday morning after crashing head-on into a police vehicle on Kirkwood Highway, New Castle County police said.

Officers were called to Kirkwood Highway near Limestone Road just before 1 a.m. after receiving reports of the wreck.

According to a witness, Herbert Arreola was driving east on Kirkwood Highway in a Volkswagen Jetta when he swerved to avoid hitting a car and then hit the center median, which caused his car to go airborne.

The car crossed into the opposite lanes of Kirkwood Highway, where a New Castle County police officer was driving their fully marked Ford Explorer. Arreola's car hit the vehicle head-on, police said.

Arreola was rushed to Christiana Hospital, where he died. The officer was also taken to the hospital and later released, the department said.

Police have not said whether they believe speed was a factor in the crash.
