Man killed after opening fire on NYPD officer in Brooklyn

A man was killed Saturday night after running from police during a traffic stop and opening fire in Downtown Brooklyn, authorities said.

Violence broke out after the stop around Nevins St. and Flatbush Ave., where officers pulled over a gold Nissan for unspecified violations at about 7:30 p.m., said NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeff Maddrey.

Several minutes later, the officers asked a man in the passenger seat to step out of the vehicle. Instead, he ran off.

During the ensuing foot chase, the suspect took out a gun and fired “multiple shots at the officer,” Maddrey said.

“The officer draws his weapon, fires shots in return and he strikes the subject in the chest,” he added.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he died, according to Maddrey.

The officer who fired his gun was taken to a hospital for ringing in his ears, said the chief of patrol.

Earlier Saturday, another man was fatally shot by cops in a police shootout. The man in that incident drew a large NYPD response after calling 911 to threaten Gov. Hochul and other officials.

“We never want our officers to use their firearms, but they were placed in a position where they were met with deadly physical force and they had to return with deadly physical force,” said Maddrey.

“This just shows you the commitment and dedication of New York City police officers and law enforcement worldwide,” Maddrey added.
