Man killed in Portsmouth car crash during police pursuit, officials say

A 35-year-old man was killed Saturday morning in Portsmouth after his car was hit by another vehicle fleeing the police, according to Virginia State Police.

Before 11 a.m., Portsmouth Police were trying to pull over a 2015 Jeep Wrangler whose driver, Ciara Elliott, was wanted on several violations. Elliott would not stop, according to a press release, and a pursuit ensued.

Elliott drove through the intersection of Victory Boulevard and California Road and collided with a 2013 Chrysler 200. The driver of the Chrysler died on impact. His female passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Elliott and her female passenger sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening and were taken to Sentara as well.

No other information has been released.

The scene is still active and a criminal investigation is continuing.

The Portsmouth Police Department requested the Virginia State Police Reconstruction Team investigate the crash.
