Man killed at Rockford-area construction site identified

A man who died while working on a Machesney Park construction site has been identified.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office identified the man as Roger Stambaugh, 69, of Rock City, Illinois.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a medical emergency in the 4000 block of Steele Drive Tuesday morning.

Authorities said a large cement pipe rolled towards Stambaugh as he was standing next to an excavator.

Stambaugh became pinned between the pipe and the excavator, according to the coroner's office.

Workers were able to free Stambaugh within minutes, but Stambaugh become unresponsive shortly after, according to the coroner's office.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The coroner's office said an autopsy revealed Stambaugh died from injuries to his chest and abdomen from being pinned between the pipe and the excavator.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration was called to the construction site and is still investigating.
