Man killed in shooting near UTC mall identified; suspect wanted

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man killed in a shooting Saturday in University City has been identified, authorities said.

Christian Espinoza Silver, a 35-year-old Mexican citizen, was announced as the deceased, Lt. Daniel Meyer with the San Diego Police Department said in a news release Wednesday.

The shooting occurred around 8:41 p.m. in the street at Nobel Drive and Lombard Place near the Westfield UTC mall, police said. When officers arrived on scene, they located two victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds — one man who was found down in the street and the other man near a car stopped in front of the entrance to an apartment parking garage.

Silver was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries, while the other victim, a 39-year-old man who has not been identified at this time, is in stable condition at the hospital.

Detectives determined the two victims appeared to be in a car together as they entered the apartment parking garage. That’s when the suspect came up to the car, began firing shots into the car and left the scene westbound. Both victims were struck as a result.

Police describe the suspect as an unknown person wearing a camouflage jacket, black pants and a black backpack.

The shooting does appear to be a targeted attack, according to police.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
