The police in Colorado have arrested a man who local media says is accused of fatally shooting of a teenage babysitter in the town of Windsor.

Trevor George, 32, was taken into custody Friday by the Weld County Sheriff's Office after officers responded to a shooting earlier that morning, according to a release posted to Twitter.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, is said to have been babysitting a young girl at a house in Windsor, north of Denver, when she attempted to stop a man from stealing a truck outside. Citing people familiar with the investigation, CBS Denver said the child's mother discovered the babysitter dead in the family's driveway after returning home and found a man attacking her young daughter in the house.

CBS Denver said the child and her mother hid in the house's crawl space before Weld County Sheriff's deputies and Windsor police officers responded.

The police said that they issued an alert for a stolen Dodge Challenger Hellcat and that authorities found George traveling in it later that morning on an interstate near Fort Collins.

The release says George will be booked into the Weld County Jail on suspicion of one count each of first-degree murder, first-degree murder after deliberation, attempted first-degree murder, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and first-degree assault, among other counts.

"No other suspects are being sought and there is no ongoing threat to public safety," the Weld County Sheriff's Office said in a release.
